In what has got to be one of the most remarkable survival stories I've ever heard about, a man in Sweden actually survived for two months after his car got trapped in the snow. The man's name is Peter Skyllberg, and thankfully, he was rescued on Friday. Great news, yes? I thought so too.
Amazingly, doctors believe he'll recover from his ordeal. How on Earth could anyone survive for two months like this? The answer really surprised me.According to reports, Peter Skyllberg's vehicle kind of made a "natural igloo" of sorts, offering some insulation against the incredibly brutal low temperatures in the area (at one point, the thermometer was 30 degrees below zero). How did he survive without food or water? The 44-year-old apparently ate snow, which helped to keep him hydrated.
As for the food, one doctor says that humans can, and have, gone without food for two months -- though certainly not everyone would make it. Another doctor says that Skyllberg's body could have gone into a "kind of hibernation." I had no idea our bodies could do this! If this happened, Mr. Skyllberg would have been able to survive on less body fuel for a longer period of time.
Still, even with the science, you've got to think that it was Peter Skyllberg's sheer will that helped him survive. I can't help but wonder if my own survival instinct could ever be that strong.
Hopefully this man will continue to improve (he's still hospitalized, obviously) and at some point, he'll be physically strong enough to tell all of us about his harrowing two months buried under the snow.
