I like writing for the Great News Blog. It is pretty much the only news I read anymore, because mainstream news is full of nothing but bad news, who-done-who-wrong stories, and depressing segments on how are world seems to be falling apart at an alarming rate. Between the economy, increasing crime and wars everywhere, good news seems to be harder to come by.
Like those reality shows that are so popular, it appears that things like bad news, drama and the ugly side of humanity are what make a news broadcast successful. I guess I am in the minority when I say I want to see and hear stories about good things, but at least I am in good company here on this blog.
I think my aversion to the nastiness of mainstream news began after my first child was born. Before I had kids, it was easy to ignore the seriousness of the issues we face today, but now that I have a future beyond my own immediate needs, those stories cut right to the bone.
How about you? In addition to seeking good news on blogs like this, have you made the jump to avoiding mainstream news altogether? How has it affected your life?
For me, I think that I worry less now because I don’t have the constant spew of negativity in my ears. I want to know what is going on, but I want it to be on my terms, in bite-sized morsels I can handle. Until mainstream starts focusing more on the positive, I will keep my news watching to a minimum.
