The need to cut carbon emissions and dramatically change the way in which we use energy has been taken to heart in Germany. As much as 20% of the European giant’s power already comes from renewable resources, such as wind and solar power, but they have taken their mission even further with a home that is so energy efficient that it can even charge an electric, family-sized sedan car. This amazing design, which features a cube with a glass side (for public viewing) was revealed by Angella Merkel this past week. So what is it all about?
The house runs on energy that is gathered by photovoltaic panels that are placed on the roof and south-facing wall. Despite the fact that the home is located in Berlin, it still gathers enough energy in this way to produce 16,000 kilowatt hours of energy per annum, which is sufficient to power the three bedroom home and charge electric cars with the excess. In effect, the house itself charges the cars, which can be parked outside the home and left to be recharged. An unbelievable amount of energy is saved in this way.
As Merkel opened the home, which is insulated to retain heat, she told the public that this little double storey home was the future of German home design. A family will now live in the home, which costs Eur. 3 million, for just over a year, before it is taken down and recycled or rebuilt elsewhere.
What do you think about all this?
