Well, we made it through New Year's and no doubt many of us read stories of terrible tragedy, with wrecks and accidents being all-too-common around the holiday. But for every tragedy comes a story of hope, including an amazing Logan River rescue in Utah on Saturday. This story gives new meaning to the term "hero."
Officials say when Roger Andersen's car went off of a steep embankment and then flipped into the icy waters of the river, he and three children were trapped. Passers-by who saw the accident acted quickly - and their actions saved lives.
Officials in Utah say no less than 10 different heroes didn't hesitate, jumping into frigid water to rescue the trapped children - two nine-year-old girls and a four-year-old little boy. Former police officer Chris Wilden was among them. Wilden apparently shot out the window of the Honda Accord and, with help from several other heroes, managed to flip the car enough to get the kids out.
One of the children, the little boy, wasn't breathing and had no pulse. That's when yet another rescuer stepped in, performing CPR and literally bringing the child back to life. The rescuer did the same for one of the trapped girls. Amazingly, all three injured children were out of intensive care just two days later. They're suffering from hypothermia, but a hospital spokesperson said they were all in fair condition.
Without people like this, where would we be? These people didn't stop to think about their own safety - they simply rushed in to help in any way they could. It takes a true hero to risk one's own life to save that of a stranger. These brave souls are the very definition of heroes.
