The nine spotted Ladybug which is the official state insect of the State of New York has made reappearance recently. It was thought have gone extinct in the New York region due to the fact that the last recorder sighting of it was from about 29 years ago.
While it was absent, there were attempts made by the State Assembly in 2006 to fill in for it with other species of lady bug. However this proposal never translated to action thus allowing the nine spotted lady bug to remain as the state bug of the State of New York. The bug was found on the 30th of Jul , when Peter Priolo, who was a voluntary participant in the effort named lost ladybug project, found the nine spotted ladybug in a sun flower patch, during a group search that was organized as the part of the efforts to find the ladybug.
The ladybugs are said to be making a slow comeback, supposedly from Amagansett. Two weeks after the first one was found, John Losey, from Cornell University, and the head of the lost ladybug project has announced that there are now enough ladybugs that have been collected to create a new colony.
While it has been found out that the native species is in trouble, other Asian species which have been imported for the purpose of pest control are also consistently lessening in their numbers. The bugs were found in a specific portion of an Amagansett farm and the doctors are now trying to find other places where the bugs could be thriving.
