Columba Rosaly is 97 years young, and this weekend, she's marrying the man of her dreams: Larry Bushnell is 85 years young. This happiest of couples will say their vows in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Saturday. Today, it's a safe bet they're celebrating a wonderful Valentine's Day!
Columba and Larry met and fell in love in a Charlotte retirement home. Here's the interesting part: She only spoke Spanish and he only spoke English when they began courting! I guess it really is true: Love is the universal language. And yes, if you're wondering, my non-romantic self is blossoming into a full-fledged, hopeless romantic. Better late than never, right? It's hard not to become one, with stories like this out there to lift our hearts a little. I'm becoming such a sucker for these great relationship later-in-life stories. They just make me smile. When Larry Bushnell sent love notes to Columba in their retirement home, she couldn't read them - so she'd run to the Internet for a quick translation. At some point, it became obvious that Larry was very, very into her, so Columba decided she'd better get someone to tutor her in English, quickly!
Anyone who doubts that love can't be found late in life can just hush right now. Larry Bushnell and his lovely bride-to-be, Columba Rosaly, are the perfect example that it can, and it does, happen. Both are widowers: Larry's second wife died about a year ago; Columba's over a decade ago. And even though they come from vastly different backgrounds (Larry from Wisconsin, Columba from Ecuador), it doesn't matter. What matters is that these two are happy, in love, and ready to make a commitment to spend the rest of their lives together - no matter how long that might be.
And what does Columba have to say about Larry? She says she's "never felt so happy," adding that she loves "to eat his nose with kisses." Everybody now: Awwwww.
I raise a toast, on this Valentine's Day, to Columba and Larry: May their marriage bring them joy for the rest of their lives. These two are an inspiration to anyone thinking that it's too late to find true love.
Happy Valentine's Day.
