Even if you don't have a proverbial dog in tonight's BCS National Championship Game fight between the Alabama Crimson Tide and the LSU Tigers tonight, you'll appreciate that this match up could result in major charity contributions to a much-needed cause: tornado relief.
As a Tuscaloosa resident, I can tell you that help is still desperately needed here for survivors of the deadly April 27, 2011, tornado that ripped my town to shreds. The efforts of United Way organizations in both Central Alabama and Southeast Louisiana will go a long way to help residents devastated in the deadly twister get what they need. Here's what's happening in New Orleans today: Before kickoff, fans are being asked to contribute funds to the "Text to Give Challenge" by texting specific phrases to set numbers. Each text is a $10 contribution toward the "No Place Like Home" campaign, which aims to help people rebuild and repair damaged homes. If someone needs a new roof, for example, donations from the "No Place Like Home" campaign can cover all or part of the cost. Keep in mind that yes, some who lost homes were insured or got FEMA assistance, but that doesn't always cover everything. Money from the United Way donations could make all the difference.
For those who can't, for whatever reason, volunteer in person to help with the tornado rebuilding efforts in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, this campaign provides a way to contribute. One thing I've learned over the past eight months or so: People are amazingly generous and caring. I knew this before, of course, but to experience it first-hand is an entirely different story. Tornado victims are not going to be forgotten, thanks, at least in part, to efforts like the United Way "No Place Like Home" campaign.
Roll Tide!
