Sunflowers in Fukushima

While sunflowers are definitely happy harbingers of summer, inciting joy in the people who love to see them, they also have the potential of healing an area after tragedy has struck. Apparently sunflowers have the ability to help decontaminate soil affected by radiation.

In order to combat the immense levels of radiation affecting Japan right now, volunteers are being asked to grow their own sunflowers all over the country, and then to send their seeds to Fukushima in order to have them planted next year and help heal the soil. While much more will certainly need to be done in order to combat these radiation levels, you have to admit that this is such a wonderful way to engage the people of Japan, empowering them to help one another, while also really making a difference in an area that is truly suffering.
